How to Stay Focused and Study Better in College

College studies are not easy. Here you not only have pages of books in front of you, but also lack of time, distraction of social media, friendships and sometimes the pressure of expectations from oneself. In such a situation, studying diligently and performing well consistently can be very challenging. But if you adopt some easy and effective habits, then this difficult path can become much easier.

1. Decide a separate place for your studies

Do you study while sitting on the bed? If yes, then this habit needs to be changed. Bed is for rest, not for study. As soon as you study on the bed, your mind goes into a mood of relaxation and focus weakens.

Instead, decide a place in the house where you only study. There should be a quiet corner, a good chair and table, things around should be organized. If there is no space at home, then take the help of a library or a quiet cafe.

If you want, you can make that place a little inspirational – like motivational quotes, your favorite photo, or plant a small plant.

2. Make a study routine

Self-control is a must when it comes to studying. Your mind begins to function automatically when you study every day at the same time. Do you feel like studying in the morning? Then choose the morning time. Do you like a quiet environment at night? Then fix that time.

Make a timetable that includes classes, study time and some rest time. You can take the help of an app or a colorful chart. This will make it clear to you what to study every day. And when you follow that schedule every day, studying will start to seem easy.

3. Make small goals

If any work seems very big, then we start postponing it. But if we divide it into smaller parts, then it starts to seem easy.

  • Finishing 1 chapter every night
  • Take 2 mock tests every week
  • Studying every Monday-Friday from 6 to 8 pm

When you set such small goals and achieve them, you gain confidence as well as motivation.

4. Reward yourself

If you have completed a task, do not forget to give yourself a small reward. This reward can be anything – an episode of your favorite web series, a cup of coffee, or going out with friends.

  • 10 minutes of Instagram after reading a chapter
  • Movie night after finishing an assignment
  • Buying something for yourself after preparing for a test

This will make your mind go towards studying again and again because the brain knows that hard work will be rewarded.

5. Reduce distractions

Phone notifications, checking Instagram repeatedly, or surrounding noises – these are all distractions.

  • Silence your phone or put it away
  • Set limits on social media apps or block them during study time
  • Use “noise cancelling” headphones to reduce background noise

There are many apps available these days that help reduce distractions during study time – such as Forest, StayFocusd or Flipd.

6. Listen to music (the right kind!)

Many students enjoy studying with music – but it’s important to choose the right kind of music.

  • Choose music without lyrics (such as lo-fi, piano, or nature sounds)
  • Don’t keep the volume too loud
  • Create a playlist that won’t need to be changed frequently

YouTube has a lot of playlists specifically designed for studying.

7. Get a good night’s sleep

If you don’t get enough sleep, no matter how hard you try – your brain won’t be able to focus on studying. Sleep helps our brain retain what we’ve learned for a longer period of time.

  • 7-8 hours of sleep is necessary every day
  • Stay away from screens before sleeping
  • Try to sleep and wake up at the same time every day

8. Eat good food for the brain

Just like we put good fuel in a car, our brain also needs good food.

  • Stay away from fast food
  • Include nuts, fruits, vegetables, eggs, and water in your diet
  • Keep a water bottle nearby while studying

9. A little exercise is also necessary

Along with studies, physical activity is also important. Sitting all day makes both the mind and the body tired.

  • Walk for 15-30 minutes in the morning or evening
  • Do yoga or light exercise
  • Do stretching during study breaks

Exercise brings energy to the body and also refreshes the mind.

10. Check the way of studying from time to time

Everyone has a different way of studying. Some people read by writing, some by listening. Some like charts and diagrams.

  • Identify the best method for you and follow that
  • Use the Pomodoro technique – 25 minutes study + 5 minutes break
  • Ask yourself questions or explain the topic to others
  • Challenge yourself with mock tests or quizzes

Conclusion: The real art is to strike a balance

College does not mean being immersed in books only. One absolutely needs time to spend with friends, self-exploration, and fun. But balance is very important so that focus does not deviate from studies.

These behaviours that can be easily accommodated into your daily schedule but are, however, in many ways powerful will not only increase your grades but will also help you maximize your time spent in college. Remember, learning has to be fun; it was never meant to be boring.
